Breaking Taboos and Empowering Communities: Celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day
After a four-days virtual and on-site campaign, this Tuesday, May 28th, 2024, the Jars of Love Community Organization celebrated Menstrual Hygiene Day with two impactful activities.
The day began with a visit to one of our supported communities, accompanied by members from our partner organization ABBA (Abana Bacu). Dr. HEZAGIRA Benigne led an insightful session with around forty women, discussing best practices for menstrual hygiene and how to educate their daughters and relatives on this often-taboo subject. The session was interactive and lively, followed by the distribution of hygiene kits containing sanitary pads, ensuring the women and their loved ones can manage their periods with dignity. The participants also shared their work as stone breakers, demonstrating their strength and resilience in a profession typically associated with men.
The team then headed to the Kinindo basketball court to celebrate with the Queens Basketball Academy. Dr. BIGIRIMANA Carole moderated a true-or-false dialogue with about twenty girls and some boys, debunking myths and spreading accurate information about menstrual hygiene. After the session, everyone shared a drink with the organizers and received sanitary kits. The celebrations concluded with a joyful group photo, as participants pledged to become champions of a period-friendly world.
These activities not only provided crucial education on menstrual hygiene but also fostered a strong sense of community and support, breaking taboos and empowering participants to advocate for a period-friendly world.
We would like to express our gratitude to all the partners who supported us during this campaign, especially UZIMA, TED and ABBA (Abana Bacu).
